General Notes:
This Bernard family in the course of time was called St Bernard; several descendants named St Bernard lived along the River St Clair. William was a trader in Detroit. In 1762 he bought a farm on the North East Coast of Detroit. This farm was patented from the French Government by Charles Chene on 14 Jul 1734. The farm became the residence of the Bernard family and ownership of it passed to the son, Hippolyte Bernard, who sold it to Francis de Paul Malcher in 1802. Under the American regime this farm is called Private Claim No. 16. Francis de Paul Malcher deeded the farm 8 Apr 1808 to five trustees representing the Catholic Church on the North East Coast of Detroit. From that time on the farm belonged to the church and was called the "Church-Farm".
