    Arthur E. Chapman, 85 of Monroe, died Tuesday November 25, 2008 at 11:58 p.m. at Mercy Memorial Nursing Care Center.

    Cremation has taken place at Roselawn Memorial Park under the direction of Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe.

    Friends and family may gather at St. Mary Catholic Church on Saturday December 6th at 10:00 a.m., where a memorial service in his honor will take place at 1 p.m. Rev. Marc Gawronski, pastor of St. Mary Church will officiate. Following, "Taps" will be played by V.F.W. Post 1138, Monroe in honor of the time Art spent in the U.S. armed forces.

    Born September 27, 1923 in Monroe, he was the son of Arthur and Grace (White) Chapman. He married Betty M. Peltier on July 14, 1945 in St Mary Church.

    Art worked as a carpenter for over 38 years with local 1301, Monroe, retiring in 1985.

    He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 31, 1942 to Nov 15, 1945. Art was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, European-Africian Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Medal.

    He was a member of St Mary Church and a 1941 graduate of Monroe High School.

    Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Betty, son, James (Sue) Chapman; 3 daughters, Glenna (Jerome) Tabbert, Bettyann (Barry) Egen, and Jacalyn (Roy) Adkins, Jr. all of Monroe. In addition, Art was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 20 great--grand-children. All of whom were a source of inspiration, motivation and comfort.

    Arthur was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Dorothy Zimmerman and Shirley Wylie; 2 brothers, Alyce and Herbert Chapman.

    In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe or the American Lung Association.
