    Herbert J. Chapman

    Adrian - Herbert J. Chapman, age 70, of Adrian died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Provincial House. He was born Jan. 7, 1936, in Monroe to Arthur and Grace (White) Chapman. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1954 and attended Lyons Township Community College in LaGrange, Ill., which was affilated with the University of Chicago. He also took courses at Indiana University and Jackson Community College. On Sept 8, 1956, he married Marlene L. Jones, and she survives. Herbert served in the U. S. Navy from 1953-1957. He had been employed by the Credit Bureau of Monroe as the assistant manager from 1962-1965. Moving to Adrian in 1965, he purchased the Credit Bureau of Lenawee County where he became the owner, operator and President. He was the first Vice President for the Downtown Retailers Organization, which formed in 1965. Herbert was the secretary for the Lenawee County Personnel Director's Association from 1969-1972, was a member of the Adrian City Commission from 1972-1978, was the President of the Assoicated Credit Bureau of Michigan from 1973-1974 and was County Treasurer from 1981-1982, Herbert served as a lobbyist for the Credit Bureau Industry at the state and federal level and had been appointed to the State Collections Practices Licensing Board by the Governor for a four year term. Herbert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Elks Club in Adrian and Las Vegas, was past President of the Adrian Kiwanis Club, and a past member of the Lenawee County Club, the Marine Corps League in Las Vegas, and was actively involved in the American Legion Post #97 and the Voiture #997 of the 40 and 8 at bothe the state and local levels.
    In addition to his wife, Malene, he is survived by a son, David J. Chapman of Adrian; a daughter, Cynthis A Morley and her husband Jason, of Adrian, a brother Arthur Chapman and his wife Betty, of Monroe; three grandchildren, Brandon M. Ripley and his wife Emily, Tyler J. Rupley; and Britney Chapman Rupley, all of Adrian; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Stephen M. Chapman' a brother Al Chapman; and two sisters Shirley Wylie and Dorothy Zimmerman.
    At Herbert's request, cremation has taen place. A memorial mass will be offered Saturday, Jan 21, 2006. at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Bob Schramm presiding. Private burial of cremains will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Monroe. Visitation will be heald on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, where there will be a Vigil Prayer Service held at 7:30 p.m. pm Friday evening. Visitation will also be held on Saturday morning on hour prior to the Memorial Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Day Break of Adrian, The Daily Bread Soup Kitchen or the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes are available at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian.
